I recently went to this event in SF called sketch tuesdays where I picked up the below pic, which was created by Dennis McNulty. He apparently loves working with chewbacca heads. See his work @ dennismcnultyart.com. All in all, it was a pretty funny event and the booze was reasonably priced.

Here is Dora the Explorer meeting Inception. Inception was such a great movie and rocked the box office, appropriately so. This clip is addictively funny and completely misleading. The little girl who plays Dora, has just the right bubbly, naive personality to make this mesh the most ironic and funny that it can possibly be. The timing is also edited perfectly, hitting from serious to not serious in a seamless fashion.

I have no idea what this video is in reference to. This video is a hit because it's an incredible showing of stupidity. It has a whiny teenage girl, her madly crazed father and bits of verbal support from the mother. It's a family affair, again of which I have no bearing. I just think it's plain idiotic to have people posting their own crying videos on the internet hoping to get sympathy from the masses. Gotta love that intraweb.

I want to laugh at this and it's incredible awkward, thus worthy of post-ness. The children's book presentation is a great deceiver. Obviously, the life of an Elf must be terrible because they are slaves. BUT they make great snow. Is that a metaphor, a codename or something...snow? I didn't know Snap, Crackle and Pop were in the snow business. It's common knowledge that the only way to kill a elf is to shoot it in the head. Do Elven Slaves even have funerals?

Adventure Game Gets Real

After finishing a video game like Zelda or Super Mario, I have often wondered, "What now?" This video explores a satirical take on rescuing a princess in modern times. Princesses get what they want at all costs, as is my modern definition of the term princess. So her hero must abide to her commands until the next adventure, which isn't happening. Being forced into a mundane job, getting a credit card and the eventually repossession show that when games get real, they also get mega-lame.

In a way, the princess turned out to be more of a villain than the robot boss guarding her castle. The robot was actually protecting the hero. The ending is great.

ICP "Miracles" - Hit or Miss

The above music video is called "Miracles" by the Insane Clown Posse. They have a mass following of devoted, young male listeners. It is this market that works well with ICP, much like that for Professional Wrestling. They provide a dramatic environment packed with testosterone. There is the occasional objectification of women. There is also face paint.

"Miracles" is spreading across the internet in viral form. It has the potential to be one of ICP greatest songs, but it has one tragic flaw. It does not adherance to their hardcore lifestyle. Imagining the site of two clowns stopping to smell the roses, becomes anything but insane. I was expecting them to squirt water out of a fake flower or have one of their pants fall down. The internet backlash was almost inevitable with the verse, "F***ing magnets, how do they work." The publicity of the song even influenced an SNL parody, which was surprisingly funny. If SNL actually makes something funny, the expensed subject must have to be really hurting.

BIT BY ZEUS is a compilation of some ingenious works of art by two up-in-coming artists out of Napa and Sonoma. Gatto and Szykowny, respectively released their first magazine early last month (3/2/10) in SF, which featured their gritty Northern California photography. Their style in setting disposition will not only be limited to the vastness of Northern California, but in exploring all fascinating places. Their adventures into the world of urban decay have inspired them to capture their environments, expressing their experiences through photographic display. Their pictures translate into a deeper vessel of thought, leading one to conceptualize how things became the way they are and the future of how things will become. Their work invites curious minds to wander in a hypothetical reality.

They show true professionalism behind the camera and I am sure we will see them in the press soon enough. Please check out the photos on their website as they plan to document their way through each installment of their magazine. There are also plans to include featurettes from other artists that are catching their scopes. I am very exciting to see where their adventures will take them as they exhibit great potential.

The Golden Poo Awarded to Comcast

Comcast has just won the Golden Poo award as being the Worst Company in America. I have been saying this for years and to see an award of this magnitude hit a company that I have publicly despised, feels great. Comcast is just awful. In college, I became so fed up with their service that I canceled my house's cable and very necessary internet just before finals. I got a hell of a lot of slack for it, but I hope my metaphorical slander impacted Comcast in the most negative manner.

This company is so terrible that they are planning on changing their name in hopes that it will make people forget how terrible they are. By changing their name to Xfinity, they will only strengthen their reputation of being a company that hides their flaws rather than fixing them. Their sweeping of dirt under the rug is almost comical in this day and age. They might be a company, but they have to handle publicity like Tiger Woods. They can't just screw anyone they like and expect nothing bad to happen.

According to a source: In 2004 and 2007, the American Customer Satisfaction Index survey found that Comcast had the worst customer satisfaction rating of any company or government agency in the country, including the Internal Revenue Service.

Thus, they are considered worse than the most emotionless government agency. If the IRS sees us as just numbers, how could Comcast see us as worse? It's simple. Comcast doesn't even see us most of the time. They are running on auto-pilot and not caring. Money in, Cable out. No service, no problem.

The Consumerist formally leaves us with the following:

"All that remains is for the Golden Poo to be delivered to Comcast HQ in the City of Brotherly Love. We fully expect them to set it in a place of honor in the lobby, where all guests can see it."

Besides the fact that this movie makes me want to vomit, this trailer is just great. It delivers a fantastic blend of the raunchy screenplay mixed with Rick Astley's Super-Contentness. The irony is served extra muggy as the '80s exploitation of a terrible idea is unveiled.
Rick Astley's music is a great way to mask any serious occasion. April Fools 2009 introduced the "Rick Roll," which began with Youtube redirecting many front page links to his song, "Never Gonna Give You Up." Here is the “Circulating Fish Tank and Plant Pot” by Sheng-Zhe Feng and Ling-Yuan Chou. It is half fish tank and half planter, a very green product.

This yin-yang concept uses the plant to filter the water for the fish while also using the fish waste to help fertilize the plant. This is also a great idea for people with limited space who want both of these things. Although no more than a single fish could live in this small sized environment, this dual-purpose appliance surely won't break the hearts of those interested.

Kick Ass is based off a gritty graphic novel, which is supposedly well translated in live action. For kicks, I heard Nick Cage is in this. 2012 Trailer Cut without SFX

No special effects, means more actor time. This is good unless the whole point of the film is to take in the SFX. I feel like this could be a potentially different movie if they focused on just the actors themselves as shown in this clip. It would be a true test of the actors and how far they could bring us into the story. Inevitably, there would be no colossal mind bombs being dropped as done in the original 5:00 trailer. Immediately, Google knew that I wanted to know "why is there a dead pakistani on my couch" ...I guess that is a completely normal thing to search. There are also a couple other gems in this suggestions drop-down. In case you are wondering about the 5th down, the answer is: "I haven't the slightest idea."

Biff Tannen - "Back to the Future: 1, 2, & 3" (1985, 1989, 1990)

Biff Tannen was portrayed by Thomas F. Wilson. Biff is shown above an the six different versions of the same ill-tempered character. Three were of different ages of his life, one was of an alternate reality, one was his grandson and the last was Biff's great-grandfather from the old west. Barely any pity goes to this negligently designed villain. His style was reckless and tragic. His tyrannous manner even ran its course as the villain in the 'Back to the Future Ride' at Universal Studios Theme Park. Biff Tannen caused so much trouble that he forced the reconstruction of time in multiple instances with Doc and Marty. Biff Tannen's trials and tribulations resulted in larger cataclysmic effects than the Flux Capacitor was designed to handle. He was a true mad man.

Guns are Safe

I went out last weekend to the Angeles Shooting Ranges. It was Awesome! The range is in Lake View Terrace, which coincidentally is the title of that Samuel L. Jackson flick. The one where he is a shady cop. Anyway, you know you are getting close when you start hearing the loud gun blasts (Click here for directions). There is a $12 fee to shoot there, but check for the $2 discount on their website. I also paid $1.50 for ear plugs, which are very necessary. Together it made for a pretty inexpensive outing... Luckily, I came with a friend who had his 30-06 rifle and some ammo. I should note that they do not rent guns, but they do sell ammo so please come prepared. His rifle is pictured below and it packed some punch.

The people out there are very friendly and helpful to get you started shooting. After signing waivers, my friends and I were given targets that we set out at 100 yards out at the appropriate cease fire time. I am not that experienced of a shooter, at all, so I felt the rush of adrenaline when it was my turn (Awesome). There were people shooting in all sorts of positions. They were lying down, standing up, sitting down, and leaning over. Some guns were mounted for slow, easy control while others were just shooting pretty rapidly. I was excited to squeeze the trigger, but I also felt secure being surrounded with some pretty experienced gun handlers. Despite the differences in formats, there was a demanding leadership present in terms of safety.

My group shot about 40 bullets at our targets. We all shot the 30-06 from the seated position. Our collective shots hit the targets maybe about 8 times including 2 bulls-eyes. Regardless, it was fun to watch the bullets blast threw the targets into the bank of dirt and sand. All in all, the Angeles Shooting Range is a very safe, fun time out. The most danger I experienced, besides the recoil of each shot was the loudness of the gun fires. My foam ear plugs did a great job reducing that volume as well. All the empty shells make a great souvenir too (they are everywhere). Good times.

If none of this has convinced you to give it a shot, do it for the slightest possibility that the whole world might need you to be a shooter one day because of these or these. Charlton Heston knows what's going on, even from the grave.

There is nothing truly original about this work, but the blurry detail is done in a LEGO block like format, which is kinda cool. This picture does the best job of summing up what I see happening in the next season of LOST. The caption refers to the last season, but its finale did not prove he was any less dead. I feel like this illustration is still the perfect representation of how the final season will pan out.

The film is called something ridiculous and it looks like they got Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law to finish this film for Heath Ledger. Take a serious trip through the trailer below. It's looks wild like the Moulin Rouge, but dark like a Tim Burton flick, and creepy because Heath is in it as what appears to be a nut-job. You see similar cases with actors ending on strange movie notes like Aaliyah in that vampire movie Queen of the Damned and Brandon Lee in the Crow. I think they had to change the scripts as well in these to adapt. Sadly, we won't see another Batman with Heath as the Joker. Take a look at The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Enjoy!

I was sold on the modern take of the Cuckoo Clock. Then I heard it features a bungee jumper. Awesome! Then it goes into detail about the secret digital video camera on the bottom. This camera can be operated from a remote location. Awesome! This is completely in the experimental phase, but when it becomes available I am sure to get one. ...Barack Obama in general, but especially the way the media and much of the public are slobber all over his nuts because he plays pick up basketball.

Just because he is the leader of the free world doesn’t justify the fact that SportsCenter, ESPN the Magazine or SI force feed us bi-monthly updates on his game and make out his hoop skillz (I have heard direct quotes such as, “The President has a smooth crossover” and “is nimble when driving to his left”) to be something they are not.

Teddy Roosevelt (boxer at Harvard), Eisenhower (football at West Point), Ford (won 2 National Championships for Michigan football), Carter (track and football at Navy), and George H.W. Bush (baseball at Yale) were far more accomplished athletes than Barack whose career ended after high school, yet they get a mere fraction of the praise.

I will not disagree with those that choose to argue that the above mentioned Presidents attained a certain level of professional success that overshadowed anything they could have ever done on the court, field, track or in the ring...and the fact that Obama has done NOTHING over the course of his administration makes running 5s with members of the UNC basketball team the highlight of his political career.

California is Cracking into the Pacific!!!

Today, a little into the afternoon, four 5.0+ magnitude earthquakes struck in the middle of the Gulf of California. The greatest of those quakes was a 6.9 M. Epicenter'd near Santa Isabel, this earthquake could be felt all the way in San Diego, downtown Phoenix and Mexico City. This goes to show how hard California wants to tear away from the United States and become water locked from the rest of the States. The plates of the San Andreas Fault stretch through the Gulf of California all the way up to San Francisco. Although geologists say that the the plates move sideways on a "right-lateral strike-slip," I think the plates are moving the land right out into the water.

The earthquakes are making it happen one shake at a time. Although no there was no serious damage or people injured, it is a good idea to prepare yourself for "The Big One." Before we know it, probably 20 years or so ( I have no proof of this) be prepared for a new state of being...

After looking at the sites Topless Robot and I Heart Chaos, I have concluded that they have made a bad call. First TR claimed that the movie "Kung Fu Cyborg" looks better than the new "GI Joe" movie. Then IHC quoted TR in its hateblog and agreed with TR. Well, I took the time to watch the trailer for Kung Fu Cyborg and I have to disagree. Kung Fu Cyborg looks terrible. Both talk about how it was made by the same guy who did "Fung Fu Hustle" as if that is a credible achievement. Here are a few more FIRE ACTION points:

Kung Fu Cyborg looks way worse than Kung Fu Hustle.
Who cares about the artistic vision of the director of Kung Fu Hustle.
GI Joe looks like it could take a shit on the both of those movies, prison-style.
Kung Fu Cyborg looks like a cheap form of Transformers, an easy feat.
I am comparing this to Transformers.
I am so mad I want to do this.

'THE HOT TUB TIME MACHINE'... What!?! This looks like the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. I mean that loosely, but for this idea to be turned into a movie sounds crazy. Like someone high up pushed the "OK button" and made half a million starving writers weep in unison.

Anthony James and Super Mario

Attached is the concept art for Anthony James' spin off of Super Mario Bros. The story behind the characters is exemplified through their artistic re-developments. James explains this gritty artwork through his short descriptions on his site. Basically, this is a dark realistic version of the video game. Two plumber brothers who are broke, try to make ends meat. They are probably addicted to drugs in the form of magic mushrooms. Peach is a singer/performer who catches their attention, but works like a slave. Bowser is her bad ass manager who has her trapped in contracts and what not. Finally, Wario is a competing plumber who wants what Bowser has.
Go to Art of Anthony James for his more descriptive analysis of the plot line and more. The concept art is very well done, with a fantastic amount of detail. James is obviously a very talented artist. His site also includes other artworks, all very interesting and unique. Click on the pics all around this site for enlarged viewing. (That's what she said)

The dramatic possibilities in the setting of Super Mario Bros. are limitless and another full film taken at a differnet angle could be very interesting. Although, I did like the fun protrayal of Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper in Super Mario Bros. (1993). It would certainly be an experience to see that movie taken in a different direction. Mainly, more drama, less futuristic gadgets and alternate sci-fi dimensions.

This concept art is missing Toadstool, but that might make this story a little TOO crazy. Maybe the story could have Luigi cause some mario drama. I suppose it's all fan fiction at this point. I like how Wario has such a huge head!

Manhattan Beach 6-Man - Something to do?

It's that time of year again. Manhattan Beach is having its annual 6-Man Volleyball Tournament. Officially titled the Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament, this event will start at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 1st and go through the finals happening the next day at 9:00 AM. For spectators, this area explodes with people and festivities. Manhattan Beach lives for this tournament (at least in my mind).

The whole town opens up more with street vendors, displays and of course the beach. I will be biking there because parking will be a nightmare. The pier is always a fun place to be with all the sights and sounds. The bars in Manhattan beach will all be ridiculously crazy and if you lucky enough you could run into "Misty May." Just try to remember her name and not drunkenly slur out something like "Kristi Hayes." There will be so much going on that you might end up streaking through Hermosa with no recollection of where you left your clothes (Been There).

On a side note, there are a few other events happening there that day too. There are also surfing/body surfing tournaments earlier in the morning happening in Manhattan and Hermosa. As well, the So Calif. Lifeguard Championships Events go on at 7:00 PM as well as the U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter & Los Angeles County Lifeguard Demo with the last rays of sunlight. All in all this will be a fun time and if I figure it out I might even liveblogit. Get there if ya can and Enjoy!

Mad Men Yourself

I am a huge fan of the Show "Mad Men." It is an outstanding drama that has about 14 Emmy nominations this year. They do a fantastic portrayal of the times when so many of the vices we see today are overlooked and integrated into regular lifestyles. They drank, smoked, and partied like they weren't at work, but they were. They treated their children with the same amount of care, but just were not informed that certain activities could be dangerous. Drunk driving, gay rights, popping pills, and adultery are also common ingredients that get throw into the mix.

The level of professionalism was higher too. They are more formal to everyone they work with and who they work for. The actors do such a fantastic job of living like this era was a dream sequence. They all look like they own the building. I work at an ad agency and the booze is kept very under-the-radar. The sexual scandals still are not that different from what you see on the show. The difference is the drama.

As a promotion (I assume) for the 3rd season starting soon, on the AMC website there is an option to MadMenYourself. As seen below, you choose through a few selections and then you can find yourself portrayed as a cartoon version of one of the Mad Men. This is me, apparently presenting my plan of lingerie for plus size women while I smoke my pipe and hold a newspaper. Classy. It's kinda fun and I suggest you check it out. Enjoy!

Scott Meets Family Circus

Family Circus is pretty much the most innocent, family-oriented cartoon out there. While surfing the web, I came across the website http://scottmeetsfamilycircus.tumblr.com/. It is run by Scott Gairdner, operator of http://scottgairdner.com/, which is his personal blog. 'Scott Meets Family Circus' is a dark comedy look into how Scott desensitizes the Family Circus.

Most FC cartoons only consist of one circle or square of illustration. Scott takes it farther and reveals the dark truth to every naive and overlooked situation. His character is presented entirely in the realm of FC and fits in its style. He generally delivers one FC cartoon and then elaborates.

M.E.O.W.

In Scottsdale, at the Millennium Resort tonight (7PM) there is speed dating seminar called Men Enjoying Older Women, or M.E.O.W. This is an event for exactly what is sounds like. Lots of younger men and lots of cougars thrown in a ring of speedy encounters. What to be expected is lots of blood, carnage and generally bad hookups that might be so horrific they make the evening news.

Some of the men who come to events such as these claim to be looking for a more mature woman (meaning a woman with a mature stock portfolio) who are in more in touch with their body and spirit (trying to regain lost health). I think they are looking for a woman who is trying hard to keep it together with steady financial backing to have some fun with before he attempts to take her assets. It's like the reverse black widow.

There have been plenty of media exploitations in the past and present that involve cougars. TV Land's "The Cougar" is the most recent to terrorize my guide screen on the cable box. ABC's "Cougar Town" and CBS's "Accidentally on Purpose" are the next to come out involving this concept. There is nothing new about this subject. In fact, the movie "The Graduate" was the first real portrayal of pop-media I can think of that explored this.

Well, strap on your big boy boots and prepare for war if you are headed out to M.E.O.W. More information is provided in the link. If you think Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore are a fluke, they say this is not a place for you. Also, be sure to brush up on your history because cougers might talk about what it was like being in college when Reagan was president. Despite all the media, apparently the term cougar can come off as offensive so do not call them that, unless they went to Washington State University and have always been a cougar/coug.

Oakland Leads the Way

Oakland has become the first US city to tax the sale of medical marijuana. As of Tuesday, this bill won with a landslide victory. This is a great feat for the city with the controlled taxation of the legal drug. The measure imposes a 1.8% gross tax, which means they pay $18 for every $1,000 in all forms of pot sales.

With 80% approval, it had the support of most of the cannabis clubs' representatives, council members, users and non-users. The opposition, was from the same group that opposed its legalization. They still refer to it an illegal substance and claim, "...looking at illegal drugs is the absolute wrong thing to do."

One facility in Oakland claimed that this tax would drive $350,000 annually from their sales. If this is the average for all, the four known dispensaries would drive in $1.4 million. That is a fantastic contribution to a hurt economy. Humpday certainly became Hempday for many Oakland residents wanting to help contribute.

The show is called Time Warp and it's on Discovery Channel. Good luck finding it. I have never seen an episode, but this clip is pretty awesome. They have a lot more clips on their website and youtube. It runs at random hours of the days. It's like MythBusters with nothing to prove and a whole lotta slow-motion cameras. Fantastic.

Blade does Twilight

When Was the Last Time...

You went to an aquarium, in Japan, without Morgan Freeman (or his step-grand daughter/lover). Burn. This looks pretty incredible. I love aqauriums and I especially love sting rays/manta rays due to the fact that I thought they were pretty tame. I pet a baby sting ray a while back then like a year later Steve Irwin was killed by one... Here are a few facts about this place:

This was shot at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Japan.
The tank is capable of holding just under 2 million gallons of water.
Thus it is named the "Kuroshio Sea."
The 60 cm thick acrylic glass panel is the second largest in the world.
Whale Sharks and Manta Rays are in there!

Nazi Garden Gnomes

In Germany, artist Ottmar Hoerl has gotten in trouble with the authorities for making garden gnomes that are giving the Nazi Salute. Prosecutors in Nuremberg are evaluating whether or not the gnomes violate the strict policy against Nazi symbols and gestures. The law in Germany prohibits such acts of Nazism.

Ottmar Hoerl has made and assembled an entire army of these garden gnomes. They all look the same with they right arms pointed out and up, presented in a gallery in Nuremberg. Hoerl did not think such an act would create such a public outcry. Below is a picture of one the gnomes up close with many more in the background.

In my opinion, if the law says not to do something then an abstract representation is cutting it too close and might be crossing the line. His gallery is pretty straight forward even if the concept is a silly one. Germany, home of the losers of WW2 has had to recover from the tyranny that they impressed upon the world and has had to cure itself to regain credibility. Enforcing laws like this is just one of the ways they are still coping and rebelling. Here in America, I think one of these Nazi Garden Gnomes would look great in the front of my apartment building, right next to the Confederate Flag.

Like my most recent trial on "Who would you rather slather with sun tan lotion: Rosie O'Donnell vs. Roseanne," I was placed in difficult position. I would prefer to not do either, but I chose the lesser of two evils. The problem is that I am now in the state of "What if?" ...Well, thank god it's hypothetical!

Runyon Canyon

This is a hike I recommend trying at least once if you live in LA or come for a visit. It is a great workout on top of having the convenience of being out your backdoor. Give yourself about 2 hours time to complete, but it probably won't take you that long.

Here is some of the view from the hike going up Runyon Canyon. As you can see, the cityscape in the background provides some bit of a reward the higher you get. There are flat areas on the trail that you can step aside and comment on the view. At the very top you get a full 360 degree view of all of LA and some of the valley. On a clear day you can see the ocean. It is not uncommon to see as far as Palos Verdes. The whole city is presented to you on the top of that hill.

When I was introduced to this hike, I was told that there is an easy way and a hard way. I have gone the "hard" way every time. I would not know where to go if I went any other way. It was actually presented to me as the hike vs. the walk. I walked to get to the hike so I could hike at the hike. Granted, this is all an exaggeration. The fire trail version is probably just as hard. Also, this is a dog off lease trail so expect to see some zany dogs and owners.

My recommendation is to go on weekdays, arriving at or a little after 7PM because street parking on Hollywood opens up to all. Weekends are a crap shoot. Find the cross street N Fuller Ave and park around there. After you park, venture north up Fuller and you'll find the park. Passed the lawn on the left, you see a semi-steep trail and that is your path to the top of the hill. Be sure not to go right on the road because that with be your long and mellow path down (I think that is also the easy path). The path is pretty straight forward, but if you get lost or stuck at any point, this is not a problem. There should be other people out there hiking the trail so just follow the people.
